The history

With over 30 years in the game, CMP Construction has built a reputation as one of Auckland and Wellington’s most trusted names for large commercial and industrial builds. Projects of that scale run on gear, and CMP’s dedicated plant and equipment division keeps it all moving. As Yard Master, Denham Hardy-Boult is the one keeping tabs on everything from generators and water blasters through to tower cranes and mobile cranes.

Before Mutu, that meant a paper trail. As gear moved from the yard to site, or from one project straight to another, paperwork had a habit of going missing, and with it, any reliable answer to where something was, who had it, or when it went out.

As Denham puts it: “Mutu solved that by giving us a reliable system to actually identify where the gear has been held, who’s holding it, and when it was issued out.”

The opportunity

Today, Mutu is the shared home for CMP’s plant, equipment and fleet. Every booking, whether it’s gear leaving the yard, moving site to site, or transferring between projects, is logged in one place, so the whole team is working off the same picture of what’s where.

CMP now manages 650+ items through Mutu, including generators, water blasters, tower cranes, mobile cranes, vehicles and other construction equipment. The same system handles maintenance reminders across gear, vehicles and mobile cranes, keeping servicing, calibration and safety checks on schedule and accounted for.

Denham’s favourite feature is Equipment Audits. He picks a site in the app, and it pulls up an automatically generated checklist of everything that should be there. He walks the site, ticks off what he finds, flags what’s missing, and the results land straight in the Site Manager’s inbox, ready to follow up.

The results

CMP has now put through 1,500+ booking requests on Mutu, every one of them a piece of gear issued, held or moved, tracked in a system built for exactly that. Centralising those requests gives Denham and his team a structured way to review and act on what’s happening across the business, while building in the kind of transparency and accountability that paper never could.

Alongside the regular bookings, CMP runs its maintenance reminders and equipment audits through the same platform, so the register, booking history and maintenance records all live in one place instead of three.

Denham’s also become a fan of the team behind the app: “Mutu’s been good to work with, the customer support is exceptional. Any time I need help I can get in touch and they respond right away, or even come out to site.” He adds: “There have been a number of occasions where I’ve suggested a new feature and gone back to find the Mutu team has actually built it into the app. That really shows they’re listening to how I use it, and how it can be made more valuable across our sites.”
