Construction equipment tracking software helps teams monitor, manage, and allocate tools across sites, improving visibility and reducing unnecessary costs in construction projects. Kinetic Electrical East Tamaki is using Mutu’s software to streamline how they manage their equipment – delivering results in both cost savings and sustainability impact.

The challenge: managing equipment across multiple sites

Like many trade businesses, Kinetic Electrical faced growing pressure around the cost and complexity of managing tools and equipment. With multiple crews working across different locations, it was becoming harder to track where gear was, what was available, and what needed to be hired or purchased.

The result? Higher hiring costs, duplicate purchases, and lost time chasing down equipment. Add in the environmental cost of unnecessary procurement and landfill waste, and it was clear something needed to change.

That’s when they brought in Mutu.

The solution: construction equipment tracking with Mutu

Mutu gives the team a live view of all their tools and equipment across the business. Instead of relying on texts, spreadsheets or guesswork, the Kinetic team now has a single platform to log, track and allocate gear in seconds.

Project Manager Darren Hegley explains “That visibility has been a game changer. On commercial jobs, timing is everything. Mutu helps us keep equipment moving between sites without the usual confusion or delays. It’s made our entire operation more efficient.”

They’ve significantly reduced how often they hire or buy new gear by checking what’s already on hand. Tools that might’ve sat idle on one job can now be easily shared or reallocated to where they’re needed most. This not only maximises the value of their existing equipment but also cuts down on time wasted searching or repurchasing.

Accountability and ownership have also improved. Team members know what they’re responsible for, where gear is expected to be, and when items are due for servicing or maintenance. Mutu has shifted Kinetic Electrical from reactive firefighting to proactive asset management – leading to fewer delays and surprises on site.

Darren continues “One of the biggest frustrations before we started using Mutu was not knowing where anything was. Tools would go missing between jobs or sit in someone’s van unused for weeks because no one else knew they had it. We were constantly wasting time calling around or replacing gear we already owned. Now with Mutu, we’ve got full visibility. Everyone can see exactly what equipment is where, and it’s taken a huge amount of stress out of managing multiple sites.”

And it’s not just admin and cost savings making a difference. Sustainability is a major focus for Kinetic Electrical, and Mutu plays a big role in helping them cut waste and reduce overconsumption. With less gear sitting idle and fewer unnecessary purchases, they’re extending the lifecycle of their assets and reducing what ends up in landfill.

The results: reduced costs and improved equipment tracking

To date, Kinetic Electrical is using Mutu to manage more than 260 pieces of equipment across 25 active sites. The platform makes it easy for staff to find what they need quickly, while the built-in Maintenance Schedule ensures everything is safe and compliant before going on site.

Beyond equipment, the team is also using Mutu to repurpose surplus materials. By making it easy for staff to list and browse leftover items from other jobs, they’ve been able to reallocate more than $20,000 worth of materials between sites and their storeroom. As a result this has kept more than 700kgs of resources from ending up in landfill unnecessarily.

Darren sums it up “Mutu’s really changed how we look at leftover materials on jobs, especially with things like cabling. On commercial jobs, we often end up with half spools left over – still perfectly usable, but they’d get buried in a container or forgotten in storage. Now the team can quickly jump on Mutu and see what’s already in the business before ordering more. It means we’re repurposing materials we already own, cutting down on waste, and saving real money across the board.”

The ability to share resources across the business has not only reduced costs and improved efficiency, but also contributed to a more sustainable, forward-thinking way of working – fully aligned with Kinetic Electrical’s values.
