Helping rebuild Hawkes Bay – Mutu features on Seven Sharp

July 22, 2024

Occasionally, companies on Mutu end up with resources they cannot use internally. When the volumes are large, Mutu usually reaches out to its network of community partners to see what can be done to repurpose these items. In this case, Hick Bros Civil had over 60 tonnes of culverts that they could not use and wanted to keep out of lanfill.

Hick Bros are one of Mutu’s top companies, having repurposed over 100 tonnes of materials back into projects throughout their business. Based on the amount of items available, Mutu felt compelled to help and see what they could do.

With the support of Federated Farmers, Mutu and Hick Bros orchestrated getting the culverts delivered to Cyclone ravaged farms in the Hawkes Bay.

Ben Redwood, CEO of Mutu, gave some insight into why Mutu got involved. “It’s a little bit of a bespoke approach for us, but it still means that we can have big impact, keep that waste out of landfill and do some good for the community at the same time”.

And the cost to the farmers? “Not a thing. A sheep and beef farmer loves a good perky like that, especially this year.” said Willie, a farmer impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle who lost all of the bridges and culverts on his farm. Hannah Morrah, a member of the Porangahau Catchment team that is helping get resources like those provided from Mutu into the right hands, was very clear on the benefit provided by Mutu. “The value to these culverts is so good. We were very thankful for the opportunity. This shipment covers probably got about 20% of what our capacity would be to use.“

And to cap things off, the Mutu team have managed to locate another 20 tonnes of culverts that their customers will be donating to continue to help impacted farmers.

“Wow, thats awesome” said Hannah. “I was mentally doing the maths, as you said that, and I was thinking, that’s epic. I think we’ll have some very happy farmers”
