The history
Kalmar Construction, a leading construction company based in New Zealand, has always been at the forefront of innovation and sustainability in the construction industry. To further their commitment to reducing waste and promoting a circular economy, Kalmar partnered with Mutu inventory management, to help facilitate the sharing of surplus construction materials.
The opportunity
almar knew that there were significant reuse opportunities for materials across the business but also required a sustainability tool that offered reports to contribute towards their Toitū certifcation. Mutu ticked both these boxes.
“We always have had materials left at the end of jobs that we have brought back to our yard,” said Justin Savage, a Director at Kalmar. “While we encouraged our Project Managers to try and reuse the items in there, the fact that it was difficult to see what was there meant it was always easier to buy brand new. What the Mutu app has allowed us to do is to create a digital inventory management system for materials as they come back to the yard after a project is completed. This means that anyone across the organisation can check what is available in the yard straight from their phone from any site, anywhere.“

The results
Kalmar was able to pay back a year’s subscription, delivering a 43-day construction payback period! Mutu measures this by reporting on the costs saved across a business by reusing materials and not having to buy them new. This is a new record on the Mutu inventory management tool with the average payback period typically sitting around 90 days. This collaboration represents a significant step towards minimising waste and enhancing the efficiency of resource use on Kalmar sites.
“The fact that Mutu helps us reduce waste and be more sustainable, while also reporting on the cost savings makes it a no brainer for us. While we are proud to have the new record, we are more excited about watching Mutu get better and better adoption across Kalmar”.
